Inspired by flower forms, this painting took on a life of its own. As with so many of my works, this has been through numerous changes and developments. The canvas was quite a lot larger (90 x 90 cm) originally, but was knocked off the easel by a visiting cat – it received a 3-cornered tear towards one side that couldn’t easily be fixed, so I decided to remove the canvas from the stretcher and restretch it on a smaller frame. As it turns out, the cat did me a favour, the composition hadn’t been right so was improved by the change in size. Later the right-hand side was darkened and the centre made lighter and brighter. The final change, to improve the balance, was the addition of the flower shape on the right hand side. I think it is finished now … maybe.
Oil on canvas, 60 x 60 cm
Will Puss get a cut of the sale? Maybe a nice piece of tuna or something. Lovely piece and does remind me a lot of your miniature flower paintings. Very free-flowing, wild and vibrant. Ribbon-turned-iris. Ah ha – on second reading – I see it is the other way round – iris-turned-ribbon…(or at least ribbon inspired by flowers whereas I was reading flowers inspired by ribbon. I would say it is perfectly finished and doesn’t need another touch of the brush, no matter how small.

Ha, rotten animal, no! Well, maybe, if I ever see it again! Yes, the origin of it is the same as the little paintings. It was nice to work on something big again, I was starting to feel constrained by hunching over little things. Thank you, I’m glad you think it is done – I was thinking of muting some of the strong contrasts, but once I saw the photo I felt more satisfied with it.

As you should be (satisfied with it, I mean). Just noticed your new banner too. Lovely. Is this the first time it is up or have I been unobservant before?

You are very observant! It is new – I had been meaning to change it for a while. It (like the previous one) is part of an unsuccessful drawing. Everything has it’s uses!

Ah ha – the banner goes very well with the painting.

Another beautiful work.
“…knocked off the easel by a visiting cat.”
Not something anyone would expect. It would make a great line to start a short story.

It is beautiful and rich. Like something pouring really thick blueberry juice from a bottle high up from heaven : )

Thank you so much Patsy. I didn’t think it was a great cat at the time, I can tell you, but it’s forgiven now!

Great work Anna, the colours really sing particularly in the centre. I love the way you didn’t give up on the work when it was ripped, but re-stretched and continued on. Karen

Thanks Karen – it took me a little while to work out how to solve that little problem, but it came good in the end!

… as much fluidity in your trailing ribbon as …. a cat’s elongated leap Anna 😀
Loving those colours ….

Aha! There is a sense of leaping – now I have a mental picture of the cat trailing a ribbon behind it … thanks Poppy!
