Now back in Australia, in warm autumn days, the cold and snow of winter in Norway seem a long way away, but the memories of the intense beauty of the cold, the snow and spectacular landscape of the fjords are very strong. I am planning to do a couple of posts with photos from the trip, but this one is just of the skies – dramatic cloud formations and the colours of sunrise and sunset in the short days of late winter.
After a few days in London with my daughter, son-in-law and gorgeous 6 month old granddaughter we embarked on a cruise ship, the Viking Star, at Tilbury and headed north. The ship docked at Stavanger, Tromso, Boda and Alta right up inside the Arctic Circle going up, and at Narvik and Bergen returning. We left the ship at Bergen then took trains to eventually return to London, more of that in later posts.
We had not expected to be taking cruises at this stage of life, but the opportunity to see the fjords in winter and the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights was too good to resist, especially when friends were already taking the cruise. The cruise was wonderful, complete luxury, magnificent food, but we also enjoyed returning to travel under our own steam once we left the cruise. More of that later.
These are just a few of the photos which capture some of the skies we saw, mostly from the ship. I took them with my iPhone, so they are not very high end, but I am happy with them!
