The next booklet in the collaboration series is on its way to snowy Minnesota! From there it will go to Denver, Colorado before returning to me. The theme is loosely based on marine subject matter. These drawings are inspired by photos I have taken of bluebottle jellyfish washed up on the beach. At first they were going to be just pen and ink, but I decided a haze of blue would anchor them to the page better. So Cathe (Amaryllis Log) and Chris (Christopher Beeson Encaustic) will be taking it on from here.
Bluebottle jellyfish have had a fascination for me for a while, and are starting to appear in my artwork (see here) more and more in different forms. No doubt there will be more …

I have no love of jellyfish nor interest in them. But I like your drawings very much – so you do some sort of alchemy to transform the subject into ART. I could quite happily live with this image on my wall – all power to you!

Ah thank you Julie! You know, I have realised that very often objects that spark my enthusiasm and make me want to draw them are things I have no intrinsic interest in, they just have something, whether it is shape, form, colour or just the opportunity to develop an idea. I find jellyfish rather horrifying, something I don’t particularly want to encounter close up, but the shapes within are so enticing, I keep coming back to them. The transformation is where the pleasure is, not in any kind of accurate, realistic representation.

Thanks Karen – I particularly enjoyed doing this drawing, and am thinking of doing a variation of it quite large. I remember those fabulous photos you took of jellyfish, I think that was when I first followed your work, they are still some of the most beautiful depictions of jellyfish that I have seen.
