Unfurling

Inspiration from my drawings can come from anywhere, I don’t remember where this came from – it may have been a native plant, or from someone’s garden. It may have been tiny, or enormous, it doesn’t matter, it is merely a starting point. The drawing has retained the multiple branching stalks of the original, but not much else. My base marks led me off in new directions, changing the form and nature of the plant, taking it from the everyday to a new and strange place. It is ready to take on the world …

The base is a loose drawing in Liquid Pencil (see previous posts for details about this medium) which has then been drawn into with coloured pencils. I always use Caran d’Ache Luminance for their lightfast qualities, as well as their richness of colour.

Below are detail images.

I draw, I paint, I am a printmaker. Always searching for the interesting detail in the world around me.

  1. This is where my thoughts go: Your creation is a plant of the future, adapted to the tough conditions of climate-changed Earth. Up close it is amour-plated with crustation-like pincers and impenetrable tissue. It is a survivor in a harsh environment. Handle with care.

    1. So interesting – your comment reflects very closely the artist statement I wrote when submitting my previous drawing (Seedhead) to an art competition. I do see most of my drawings making a commentary on the future, the terrifying form of nature that may emerge if we don’t look to protecting the earth from the juggernaut that is flying towards us in the form of climate change. I like the terms you use, ‘armour-plated’ and ‘impenetrable’. There is a brutal strength in there!

      1. The liquid pencil image is awesome, Anna! So hard to believe you went from that step to all the gorgeous color! Thank you so very much for posting the image. I’d love to follow you in Instagram, but alas, I’m not an Instagram user.
