Beginning from simple elongated, twisting marks, originally inspired by the stamens of a flower, this drawing developed as it went. I had deliberately decided to concentrate on using graphite for the main structure of the drawing, but as it went colour demanded to be included, initially in small areas within the tendrils, but leading to the inflorescences at the end of each tendril.
It could be something found in the depths of the ocean, or in an obscure plant. It may be tiny or enormous. It is a living thing, but whether with a beating heart or not, that is up to the viewer to decide.
64 x 47 cm, graphite and coloured pencil on a base of Liquid Pencil on yupo synthetic paper.
This drawing has that Anna Warren sense of menace about it, so I’m thinking these are carnivorous tendrils. The stretched elongated forms bring to my mind elements of surrealism; specifically Dali. It is good to enlarge the image on my desktop so that I can appreciate the universe of forms in every particle.

When it began there was no menace, it gradually crept in! I think they are carnivorous – I can imagine them waving about, sniffing for victims.

Anna there must be something a bit dark deep in your psyche which tiptoes out into your art. Yes, the use of red helps to implant the idea of a killer plant.

The colour at the end of the tendrils adds drama.

Thanks Vivienne! The tendrils were asking for that bit of extra!
