Each one of these small drawings is its own world within a greater one, a microcosm interacting with its neighbours, with similar characteristics and origins yet each is unique.
The inspiration came from plant forms, non-specific but reminiscent of objects in the natural world. The palette of colours is consistent, thus unifying the forms within the grid.
The drawing began with loose random marks made in acrylic paint of one side of a sheet of translucent drafting film, controlled into 7 cm squares by masking tape. Once I was satisfied with these marks I removed the tape, turned the sheet over and began to draw into each little panel with coloured pencils – once again restricting the colour range to maintain unity – to enhance the forms, retaining the sense of plants, but allowing other forms to appear, hints of small creatures or faces, without making them a feature. Each one was a surprise.

“The Sensual World” by Kate Bush comes to my head as I view your drawing. The forms are so organic, so sensual and colourful, they burst from the page in a glad dance.
Each form can suggest many things, winged or watery creatures, plant life, organ parts, or pure abstracts (to suggest but a few).
It is a drawing for the eye to wander endlessly over, always seeing new things. I’m sure you relished working on it as the viewer relishes studying it.

Yes, I loved working on this drawing, I extended my time on it because I didn’t want to stop! I didn’t work on it progressively, ie, start at one corner and work across, but picked out random panels which spoke to me. This meant that at the end I could go back and revisit some of the early ones.
I didn’t know the song by Kate Bush so I have just found it – I think it works with this nicely, there is much sensuality in the forms. I like the idea that each form suggests a range of things – hopefully will keep a viewer’s eye coming back.
